Karl Anton von Martini – Right Vienna

Karl Anton von MartiniDo I make a (fishy) compromise and prevent a defeat. Or is a (fishy) compromise the bigger defeat for my consciousness.
I get these ideas when I look at the ups and downs in Martinis’ life in the many socio-political areas of conflicts where he was active. Because Martini (1726 – 1800) quite often stood to his knowledge, insights and beliefs even if this was not wise strategically. Perhaps his way of living was based on a belief like this: “If we don’t make concessions we can collapse but never get spoiled.”*

Karl Anton Martini was born in Revò thirty kilometres north of Trient. The Bishop Principality at that time was a “paradise for lawyers and notaries”. Affected by this he arrives via the Read the rest of this entry »

Leonardo da Vinci – Last Supper in Vienna

Das letzte Abendmahl

Vienna owns Leonardo da Vinci’s (1452 – 1519) “Last Supper“. No, I don’t come up wit new conspiracy theories. The Viennese Supper is a copy. A mosaic. 918 x 447 centimetre, twenty tons. Created at the beginning of the 19th century by the Roman Giacomo Raffaelli. Ordered by Napoleon. The completion was too late for Napoleon to own it. That’s why the mosaic came to the Minoritenkirche (Minorite Church) at the Viennese Minoritenplatz (Minorite Square).

The emperor Joseph II. gave this church as a present to the Italian nation. The church is a national church – “Maria Schnee” (Maria Snow). A Last Supper as a copy in Italian surroundings; that means Italian flair, that you can enjoy easily. Take the underground number 3 (U3), exit Minoritenplatz instead of fighting your way through traffic jams on the motorway to the original Last Supper in Milan. No over-organised visiting rules as in Milan („Reservation required. In order not to lose the reservation, visitors must arrive 15 minutes before the time allocated for the visit.”)
And – in Milan no one is surprised to “find” the Last Supper. But in Vienna you can still impress people with the Last Supper.

Ottavio Piccolomini – Scheme and Good Deeds

Piccolomini

The 9th District of Vienna – home of multi-faceted figures of the past.

Pilgrims show their Freud devotedness in the Berggasse. Not far away in the Servitengasse you can visit Prince Ottavio Piccolomini, Wallenstein’s general, the conspirator against Wallenstein and the benefactor of the Serviten in Vienna. He „tidied“ und survived the battle of Lützen (near Leipzig) during the Thirty Years’ War, was successful during many more battles and used his strategic skills for the perfect scheme against Wallenstein. And turned himself into the benefactor of the Serviten Order- what a metamorphosis! Piccolomini is buried in the Serviten church underneath a side altar. In an alcove of the cloister of the Viennese Serviten next to the church a bust made by the sculptor Francesco Mangiotto commemorates Piccolomini. Whatever you may think about him the cloister and Piccolomini are worth a visit. Maybe during the Long Night of the Churches 1st June 2007 (programm in German).
